Subject: Bomb threats via email
Incident Date: 12/13/18
Date of Media Release: 12/13/18
By: Sergeant Edward Hartwick
The Fitchburg Police Department, like many other law enforcement agencies across North America, has received at least one report of a bomb threat sent via email to a local business. While there has been some variation in the content of the emails, they generally state:
• A device has been planted in the recipients place of business
• Someone is on site or nearby to monitor the business for unusual activity
• The recipient must send money to the sender via BitCoin
Based on information received from our law enforcement partners at the state and federal level, we do not have any reason to believe these emails are credible threats. This appears to be an email scam and can be treated accordingly by deleting it.
As always, we encourage our community to stay alert and report suspicious activity.
