[ARCHIVED] Verona Road Construction Update May 20-24

After last month's traffic switch on Verona Road (US 18/151) in Fitchburg, modifications were required to the County PD/McKee Road intersection. The traffic signal timing at this intersection is staged for the remainder of the 2019 season and timed to prevent trapping vehicles in the middle of the intersection (between the northbound and southbound Verona Road movements). Unfortunately, simultaneous movements on Verona Road or County PD are not possible due to the construction staging and turn lane restrictions (i.e., southbound Verona Road to eastbound McKee Road). The traffic team continues to monitor this intersection and will make adjustments where possible.

This current intersection is overcapacity and serves as a great example of why we are reconstructing the Verona Road corridor. Two bridges will be built this year to carry Verona Road traffic over County PD. This fall, Verona Road will be open to three lanes each way with travel under Williamsburg Way and over County PD.

When the Williamsburg Way bridge and intersection fully reopens in July 2019, motorists could use this intersection to avoid the delays. In the meantime, only right turns in and out are permitted at this location.

Upon further evaluation and analysis of the Verona Road and County PD intersection operations, turn restrictions are being implemented for a nearby intersection to improve mobility through this area. To minimize the backups on eastbound County PD, turn restrictions will be in effect starting Wednesday (May 22) at the County PD and Nesbitt Road/Kapec Road intersection. Through traffic and left turns from Kapec Road must use the Fitchrona Road intersection with County PD. All turning movements for Nesbitt Road will remain open. These restrictions will be part of the permanent intersection configuration when the Verona Road Project is complete. This alternative aims to enhance traffic operations and mobility during construction. Access is maintained to the area businesses and residences.

Backups and delays are expected through this area, especially during morning and afternoon rush hours. Please plan ahead, allow extra time through this area, and use alternate routes. We appreciate your patience and understanding throughout this major project.

Weekly Construction Update at: https://projects.511wi.gov/veronard/wcu/    The entire Verona Road Project is currently scheduled to be completed in fall 2020.

As always, access to businesses and residences remains open. For more information, visit the link below.
