High Ridge Trail Shooting Investigation Update
9/30/19
Yesterday, at 11:56 a.m., the Fitchburg Police Department received a call from a resident on High Ridge Trail reporting a group of people fighting in a parking lot between the 2100 and 2200 blocks of High Ridge Trail.
During the course of that call, multiple gunshots were fired. Responding officers arrived to a chaotic scene with multiple people still present. First responders identified a twenty-one-year-old female with a life-threatening gunshot wound and a twenty-two-year-old female with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound on scene. Both females were transported from the scene via ambulance to a local hospital.
A short time later, a forty-nine-year-old female arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. She reported she was shot during the incident on High Ridge Trail.
Based on the investigation thus far, it has been determined the twenty-two-year-old female with the non-life-threatening gunshot wound, identified as Shaquita Lee, of Fitchburg, fired a handgun and struck the twenty-one-year-old female. Lee was taken into custody following her discharge from the hospital. She was booked into the Dane County Jail on a tentative charge of first-degree attempted homicide.
The twenty-one-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries and remains at a local hospital. The forty-nine-year-old female is expected to be discharged from the hospital today.
Investigators interviewed a twenty-eight-year-old male who was at the scene and is believed to have fired additional shots. He is cooperating with investigators.
Two firearms believed to be involved in this incident have been recovered and we are not seeking any additional suspects related to the shots fired. It appears all the parties involved in this incident either knew or were otherwise acquainted with one another. We believe the initial fight resulted from an ongoing feud between the two groups related to a family matter.
The investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing. Investigators from the Fitchburg Police Department are being assisted by personnel from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department. The Madison Police Department, Town of Madison Police Department, Verona Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office assisted our department at the initial scene.
Again, this is an active investigation. Additional arrests or referrals may be made related to this incident. We are also interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed or recorded any portion of this incident.
