Every year the Fitchburg Fire Department (FFD) participates in the national Fire Prevention Week to education the community regarding the dangers of fire. This year Fire Safety Week is October 4 – 10, 2020. Normally, this week would be celebrated with an open house, public education in our schools, and more.  Due to COVID-19, and the guidelines set forth by Public Health of Madison and Dane County, the FFD is disappointed to announce the cancellation of our Annual Open House and other in-person educational events. HOWEVER, we have found a safe way to celebrate the week while practicing recommended physical distancing.

The FFD is excited to announce its “Chalk Your Walk” fire safety campaign.  This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Serving up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.”

The FFD is calling on the community to participate in the campaign by creating your own sidewalk chalk fire safety messages throughout September and submitting pictures of your artwork to the Fire Department by September 30, 2020.  You can learn more about how to participate by visiting our Facebook page @fitchburgfirerescue or our website at www.fitchburgwi.gov/fire. All submitted photos will automatically be entered into a contest for the best safety message. The most creative and unique entries will be featured on the FFD Facebook page and the winning artwork will be used by the FFD to promote Fire Safety. Judging will take place in early October.

Here are a few key messages to get the ideas flowing:

  • Keep a close eye on what you’re cooking; never leave cooking unattended
  • Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking
  • Keep flammable items – oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, or towels – at least 3’ from the stovetop
  • Be on alert. If you’re sleepy, don’t use the stovetop or oven to cook

Be sure to follow the FFD on Facebook and watch for your artwork to be featured.  For more information about “Chalk Your Walk” and Fire Safety Week, please contact us at fire@fitchburgfire.gov or by calling us at 608-270-7070.
