Details:
A twenty-seven-year-old man died in a traffic crash on Highway 14 in Fitchburg Wednesday night.
Around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, Fitchburg officers and emergency personnel responded to the southbound lanes of Highway 14, just south of Lacy Road, for a crash involving an SUV and semi-truck.
As emergency crews arrived on the scene, they found a deceased male who had been ejected from the SUV. Investigating officers determined the male had been driving the SUV the wrong way on Highway 14, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, before it collided with the southbound semi-truck. Officers noted the presence of heavy fog in the area before the crash, but it is unknown if weather conditions played a role. The driver of the semi-truck was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. There were no other occupants of the SUV or semi-truck.
The crash investigation remains open by the Fitchburg Police Department, and no additional information is available for release at this time. The Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit assisted with investigating and reconstructing the crash. The Town of Madison Police Department assisted the Fitchburg Police Department at the scene.
The southbound lanes of Highway 14 were closed for approximately 4.5 due to the crash and investigation.
Identification of the deceased driver will be released by the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.
