[ARCHIVED] Residents Asked to Help Water Trees During This Time of Below Normal Rainfall

watering trees

Residents are asked to assist in watering trees during this period of above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall. This weather is tough on trees growing in the urban environment.  Newly planted trees need to be watered every 2-3 days and trees planted in the last 2-5 years should be watered once a week in this weather. Apply enough water to get the soil wet to a depth of 6 inches. Letting a hose run slowly at the base of the tree, moving it occasionally, is the best way to do this. It is best to water during cooler weather such as early to mid-morning. Placing 2-4 inches of wood chips at the base of tree (without touching the tree trunk) can help retain this moisture.
