The Fitchburg Police Department has concluded its investigation into the crash on September 8, 2016 involving a vehicle and bicyclist. This crash occurred at approximately 4:38 pm on Syene Road at the Capital City Bike Trail crossing.
The investigation indicates Alan P. Foley, age 51, of Madison, was operating a vehicle northbound on Syene Road after turning from westbound McCoy Road. As Foley was traveling northbound on Syene Road at the Capital City Bike Trail, a bicyclist, Cheryll A. Maples, age 63, of Madison, was riding her bicycle eastbound on the Capital City Trail and struck the driver side of Foley’s vehicle. Foley was wearing his seatbelt and received minor injuries. Maples was wearing a helmet and received life-threatening injuries.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction team responded to the scene to assist the Fitchburg Police Department with the investigation into the crash. The investigative information indicates that Maples failed to stop at the stop sign that is posted on the Capital City Bike Trail at Syene Road prior to colliding with Foley’s vehicle. Foley was operating his vehicle at an appropriate speed after turning onto Syene Road. Alcohol is also not a contributing factor in this crash. No citations have been issued.
Due to prior media coverage regarding Maple’s involvement in this crash, her family has provided the following statement:
“Cheri's family continues to focus on helping her recover from this serious accident. We are especially grateful to UW Hospital's trauma medical staff, the Fitchburg Police Department, and everyone who has expressed concern and support from literally all over the world."
