Overview
When a new officer is hired by the Department they begin a fourteen week field training program upon completion the basic police academy. The program is designed to gradually introduce the many tasks and skills required to work as an officer in the City of Fitchburg. Throughout the program new officers work with a field training officer who rides with them and observes their work.
Field Training Officers (FTOs) are responsible for observing and evaluating new officers to ensure that they meet the standards of the Department. FTOs work hard to constantly train and develop the skills of the new officers. After new officers complete the initial fourteen week training they continue to work with the FTOs until they are off probation. Even when not training FTOs are a source of advice for newer officers.
