Fitchburg Boosts SolSmart Rating to Gold

As of November 20, 2025, the City of Fitchburg is a Gold SolSmart community!

Started in 2016 with funding from the US Department of Energy, SolSmart has helped hundreds of communities to boost the development of solar energy within their boundaries, through improved resources and education, reduced fees and other barriers, clarified zoning/ordinance language, and more simplified permitting and inspection processes.

Fitchburg attained its initial SolSmart designation in 2019, at the Bronze level, and in recent years staff have worked to address remaining areas for improvement that paved the way to a Gold designation.

See the City's press release for more information on this recognition, and visit the SolSmart website to learn more about this program.

In 2024, for the fourth consecutive year, Fitchburg joined dozens of states and cities around the United States in officially recognizing October 2 as Energy Efficiency Day. Read the 2022 proclamation here, or by clicking the image below.

Fitchburg signs 100% Renewable Energy pledge

The City of Fitchburg Resolution to Address Global Climate Change through Clean Energy (R-26-19) was introduced to Common Council on January 22, 2019 and formally approved on February 26th, 2019. The resolution allows the City to develop an Energy and Water Plan that includes a resiliency, sustainability, and adaptation plan to deal with anticipated climate changes. Setting a goal of meeting 100% of the city's operational energy needs through renewable energy generation by 2030, the resolution is an extension of the City's 2008 commitment to generate 25% of municipal energy use from renewable sources by 2025 through the State of Wisconsin's 25x25 Energy Independent Community Pledge.

By passing the resolution, Fitchburg became the 4th Wisconsin city to commit to 100% renewable energy usage.
