Disinfection

Chlorine is added to the City's water to disinfect the water and minimize the risk of contamination by bacteria and viruses. The City maintains an average free chlorine residual around 0.6 parts per million.

Fluoride

Fluoride is added to the City's water system to strengthen teeth and to help prevent tooth decay. The City maintains an average fluoride level in the water system of 0.7 parts per million.

Polyphosphates

Polyphosphates is a food grade additive added to the water supplied from three of the City's high capacity wells to maintain water clarity and reduce the possibility of iron stains. Polyphosphates do not remove the iron in the water, rather they hold the iron in solution; reducing the amount of iron that settles to and accumulates on the bottom of the water mains.
