[ARCHIVED] Firefighters Train on Techniques to Rescue Large Animals

Large Animal Emergency Rescue

Fitchburg firefighters recently participated in an awareness level class that focused on key concepts that can be used to rescue to rescue large animals. Topics included animal behavior, common responses by animals to actions being taken by rescuers, containment techniques, how to prevent injuries to both rescuers and animals, manipulation techniques, and an overview of incidents that are unique to trailer situations.

The general overriding theme of the talk was safety for our personnel, the public and the animals we are trying to help. The training was accomplished through discussion and hands-on training with 800-pound articulated training mannequins.
